The Course Design

Novo Carthago in a spectacular 36-hole project, designed under the unique project philosophy, conceived to bring out the excellent characteristics of the lands that border the sea, integrating them into a golf project. The land was studied to determine the most appropriate use of the spectacular views, the natural model of the land, orientation of the location, climate and geological conditions as well as other elements that shape the area’s natural topography, working on the unique characteristics and habitat of the region, so as to create the best possible golf design in this unique location. Thus, the two Novo Carthago courses will be characterised by harmony with the scenery that surrounds them.

Improving natural characteristics: Our commitment is to the design the golf courses to ensure that they appear to have been created by the same forces that created the surroundings in which they are found. The two Novo Carthago golf courses are to be integrated into their natural surroundings, with each hole moulded so that players appreciate them as the individual art works they are, as well as being part of a larger whole.

Challenge and the fun of the game: Our design philosophy and strategy seeks to create a versatile set of holes allowing the average player to have a good time while remaining challenging for the best professional players. To achieve this versatility, we have designed multiple tees for each hole, placed in strategic positions to create different playing lines. This is a fundamental part of Robert Trent Jones’ philosophy for Novo Carthago.

Environmental sensitivity: Hansa Urbana and Robert Trent Jones II agree that environmental sensitivity and management must be essential principles of the Novo Carthago project. Given that, nowadays, one of the greatest challenges when building a golf course is water usage, special attention has been paid to incorporating techniques that encourage water savings. Both courses are also characterised by minimised areas of greens to be maintained, without a consequent reduction in quality standards that guarantee the enjoyment of this first class golf course. The varieties and types of lawns used and their sophisticated irrigation systems will also help to maximise water savings.

Distinction and Creativity: Hansa Urbana SA has designed a spectacular and unique project, and aims to give it an image that is appropriate for such a multi-service resort. The courses are going to have different concepts; the “Executive Course” will have exceptional quality lawns within a notably rolling countryside and a naturalised environment, with areas of indigenous plants, whereas, the “Championship Course” will retain the land’s original features and incorporate sand areas into the game. Our aim is to achieve a consistent and overall image for this great project, an image that shows exciting, fun and unique holes that any golfer can enjoy, an image that, without doubt, sets Hansa Urbana’s projects apart.

Robert Trent Jones Jr. and his team have taken on the design of Novo Carthago’s two golf courses. An exceptional team of experts backed by over 100 years of experience and by the design of more than 200 courses in 35 countries across the world’s 5 continents.

Among many others, he was charged with designing such prestigious and internationally recognised courses as Puerta de Hierro, Madrid (Spain), The Links at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, California (USA), Penha Longa Golf Club, Lisbon (Portugal), Le Prince de Provence Golf Club, Vidauban (France) and Santa Elena Golf Club, Laguna (Philippines).
